SKETCHBOOK PURPOSES:

All high school art students are required to keep and continue to add to a sketchbook.  The idea is to develop visual ideas that you enjoy working with.  A sketchbook may serve several different functions for you and will become a valuable resource for your art course, so that you can select subject matter to use for your art projects.  For example, a sketchbook can:

  1. Develop or “visually play” with new forms or shapes (doodling).

  2. Observe and record objects or still life drawing.

  3. Contain portraits or characters.

  4. Give new ideas or images you enjoy to work with.

  5. Include visual memories or events or situations you found visually interesting.

  6. Record media experiments – different combinations.

  7. Can assist in selecting ideas that interest you in other works of art you enjoy.

ADDITIONAL SKETCHBOOK USES:

In addition to developing creative visual ideas, you may also use your sketchbook to record verbal ideas and information in your sketchbook.  For example:

  1. Keep notes from class, a small drawing or sketch will serve as a symbol.

  2. Write quotations or poems that interest you.

  3. A personal journal of assignments, due dates, project interests, insights.

  4. Keep an artists diary.

  5. A resource book of ideas, media interests, and art resources.

  6. Attach clippings or pictures from newspapers or magazines, etc. (a visual scrap book of your personal interests and ideas or comments).

  7. Critically review art work, keeping a record of ideas “brain storm” (remember if you don’t record it you may forget it).

  8. Add comments or have others comment on your sketches or ideas.

SKETCHBOOK GRADES:

Sketchbooks are 30% of your overall grade.  Each sketchbook entry will be worth 40 points.  The following is a rubric on how your sketchbook will be graded.

SKETCHBOOK RULES:

* BRING YOUR SKETCHBOOK TO ART CLASS EVERYDAY!!!  You will be using your sketchbooks for sketchbook assignments as well as doing preliminary sketches for your projects. Sketchbooks will be due every 3-4 weeks.  A late sketchbook may be handed in at the next class; however, you will receive a 5% deduction for each day late.

*SPEND AT LEAST 30 MINUTES ON EACH ENTRY Avoid doing the entries at the last minute.  Try to relax as you draw and enjoy yourself.  Many artists listen to their favorite music while they work to block outside distractions.

*USE ANY ART TOOLS YOU WISH, unless the entry tells you otherwise.  It’s fun to make a collection of art supplies in a decorated box to keep in your drawing area at home.

*USE ONLY ONE PAGE FOR EACH ENTRY.  If you make a mistake, hide it inside your drawing or just ignore it.

*DO NOT CROSS OUT MISTAKES!  Do not use the front and back of the sketchbook page unless you absolutely need to extend your drawing onto that side of the page.

*REMEMBER IT IS IMPORTANT TO DO EVERY ENTRY.  Be creative and have fun!  If you do each entry thoughtfully and to the best of your ability, you will always have a good grade on your sketchbook.
